Notes

• 56 ART-naive subjects were studied to assess whether T-cell responses to Gag and Nef are biased towards infecting subtype recognition, in a population infected by subtypes A, C and D and their recombinant forms. Overlapping 15-mer isolate-based Gag and Nef peptide sets representative of local subtypes were used. The best recognized epitope variant in terms of magnitude and breadth corresponded to the infecting subtype, in this case usually subtype C. Hot spots of CTL recognition in Gag were in p24, p17 and p15; hotspots in Nef were in its central, conserved region.
• Epitope variants RPGGKKhY, RPGGKKkY and RPGGKKqY were studied as peptide sequences EKIRL-RPGGKKhY-ML (subtype C), EKIRL-RPGGKKkY-RL (subtypes A and D) and EKIRL-RPGGKKqY-RM with 12.5% responders. Subtype A was best recognized. Associated HLAs frequently expressed within the studied cohort are listed in the study as B07, B42.
