Notes

• CTL control of a drug resistance-containing mutant HIV-1 was detected. The lamivudine/emtricitabine-generated M184V escape found within epitopes YQYMDDLYV or VIYQYMDDLYV was able to be recognized, resulting in lower viral load (VL) in vivo and ability to inhibit viral replication in vitro. Since CTL responses were detected against RT in ART-failing subjects, complete suppression of VL in the presence of drug-resistant HIV-1 without changing ART is possible.
• Epitope VIYQYVDDLYV was discovered as a variant of wt epitope VIYQYmDDLYV, but was able to elicit response from a treatment-naive subject with high avidity. In all emtricitabine-lamivudine users who carried M184V-virus, however, VIYQYVDDLYV is the optimal epitope to elicit much stronger CTL response.
