• The study objective was to design a vaccine construct containing HIV-1 epitopes that would generate broad CD8+ responses. Among 14 known B7-restricted epitopes, 11 induced a response in B*07 transgenic mice. Among 11 novel candidate epitopes, all induced a response in B*07 mice, and all induced a response in at least 1 human B7+ donor. Immunological recognition of these epitopes was confirmed in HLA-B*0702 HIV-1-infected individuals.
• QPIQIAIAAL is a novel B07 epitope that was recognized by 6/6 B*07 transgenic mice.
• This epitope was recognized by 4/8 HLA-B*0702 HIV-1-infected individuals.
