Notes

• Since diagnosis of HIV-2 has important implications for ART, dual infections of HIV-1 and -2 were tested for. Of 1200 HIV-infected subjects, only 13 were reactive to both HIV-1 and HIV-2. Upon testing with immunodominant region (IDR) peptides, 30 subjects' samples were reactive to gp36 and gp41 IDR peptides. Peptide-based enzyme immunoassays, Western blots and PCR were used in this study. Some IDR consensus sequences were cross-reactive with HIV-1 and -2 infected CTLs. With the low prevalence of HIV-2 found in Maputo City despite population migration, HIV-1 is still the driving force of HIV-infections in Mozambique.
• 22 subjects who reacted to this HIV-1 gp41 IDR cross-reacted to HIV-1 gp36 IDR too. 6 variants of this IDR were found.
