• 15 cluster II subtype CRF01_AE-infected, ART-naive MSM subjects from Liaoning province were followed for a year post-infection, to chart viral escape as well as CTL response to Gag, Pol and Nef peptides. Gag and Nef were the main targets of CTL response, and Gag immunodominant response correlated with viral control in that first year.
• While relative magnitude of Gag response correlated negatively with viral set point at both time points studied, 3 months and 12 months post-infection; no correlation was found between Pol-specific relative magnitude of response or any of the relative breadths of HIV-1 response. Nef relative magnitude correlated positively with viral set point through year 1.
• CTL pressure correlates with 5/6 variants in Gag immunodominant epitopes or flanking regions. Epitope IEVKDTKEAL had several variations in Subject 12, both within and flanking it, for whom it was the immunodominant epitope at 3 months post-infection. Putative restricting HLA is B*40.
