Notes

• Immunological responses in early subtype C infection were characterized. Nef, Pol and Gag were the most frequently targeted proteins from as early as 3 to 8 weeks postinfection. Nef was immunodominant, with more than 75% of individuals recognizing Nef. Many responses to peptide pools were derived from the recognition of one immunodominant peptide.
• One acutely HIV-1-infected individual had a peptide response to presumed optimal epitope HSKRRQDIL within peptide IHSKRRQDILDLWVYYHTQG. Autologous viral escsape occurred at 5 weeks.
