Selective variations were only detected in virus isolated from individuals expressing the appropriate HLA type. Variant peptides with single substitutions within the minimal epitope did not always completely abrogate HLA binding, suggesting that multiple alterations within a particular epitope may need to accumulate during disease progression to allow viral escape. Substitutions that were found only in the 3 HLA-A11 donors did not promote HLA-A11 assembly. Substitutions that were found in both HLA-A11 positive and negative donors, however, did not markedly alter the reactivity of the peptides.
