Notes

• Immunological responses in early subtype C infection were characterized. Nef, Pol and Gag were the most frequently targeted proteins from as early as 3 to 8 weeks postinfection. Nef was immunodominant, with more than 75% of individuals recognizing Nef. Many responses to peptide pools were derived from the recognition of one immunodominant peptide.
• One B*4501-positive acutely HIV-1-infected individual had a peptide response to presumed optimal epitope AEAMSQANS within peptide SHKARVLAEAMSQANSA. Autologous viral escape occurred in 10 weeks, and response was lost at 26 weeks.
• Concomitant with lost response, the patient showed a change in the flanking sequence from AEAMSQANS|A to AEAMSQANS|v.
