• Activation and expansion of antigen-specific CD8+ T-cells shows a delay following infection that allows early viral replication. Until day 10, the kinetics of CD8+ T-cell expansion was the same in vaccinated and control macaques. An increase in virus-specific CD8+ T-cell numbers around day 10 in vaccinated macaques coincides with a slowing in viral replication. This indicates that while cytotoxic T-lyphocyte-inducing vaccines may have a long-term benefit in controlling viral replication and preventing disease progression, they cannot prevent infection.
