In early HIV-1 infection, patients develop autoimmune thrombocytopenia, with Ab directed against beta3 integrin, GPIIIa49-66. Panning with a 7-mer phage display library using rabbit anti-GPIIIa49-66 (CAPESIEFPVSEARVLED), the immunodominant epitope of the identified potential molecular mimicry epitopes with HIV-1 Env (sklFDeGLFn, elfnkTIIFP), Pol (geAPEFPskq), Gag (gktHyMINPl) and Nef (qeeeeVgFPVt, qeeeeVgFPVt, edeGigFPVr, fkLVPVSEae, ssnTPTTNaa) proteins. Pools of these peptides elicited Ab in rabbits that induce platelet oxidation in vitro and thrombocytopenia in vivo upon passive transfer. Nef (qeeeeVgFPVt), Gag (gktHyMINPl), and Nef (fkLVPVSEae) all overlap with known HIV-1 epitopes. Li2005 (mimics)
