COMMENT Simian immunodeficiency viruses from African green monkeys are
usualy relatively nonpathogenic. SIVagm9063 is derived from
SIVagm90 after passage in a pig-tailed macaque (individual PT63)
which was sacraficed due to oportunisitic infection with M. Avium
12 months after infection. SIVagm9063 was cultured on a human CD4+
cell line (CEMss), prior to inoculation of Rhesus macaques (n=2),
African green monkeys (n=2), and pig-tailed macaques (n=16). Eight
of the pig-tailed macaques recieved the uncloned 9063 isolate and
eight recieved the supernatant from a cell line transfected with
the infectious molecular clone SIVagm9063-2. All 16 pig-tailed
macaques became infected and showed signs of immune deficiency. The
2 rhesus macaques and the 2 African green monkeys became infected,
but remained healthy and showed little virus production at one year
post-inoculation.
